LONDON--The U.K. government said Wednesday that it is withdrawing some staff and dependents from its embassy in South Sudan, after recent violence in the capital Juba, and has advised British nationals against all travel to the area.
"Due to reports of fighting in Juba you should stay at home and avoid movement unless necessary," the British Foreign Office said in a statement, adding that reports indicated that flights to and from Juba airport have been suspended.
The embassy remains open, it said, adding that British nationals wishing to leave Juba should contact the Foreign Office.
A spokesman for the South Sudanese military estimated Wednesday that 450 people had been killed in mounting political and ethnic violence in the capital. The fighting has cast uncertainty over the future of the nation--one of the world's youngest republics and one of Africa's top oil producers.
