China Coast Guard vessels trespassed in Japanese territorial waters on Dec. 8 near the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, the Japan Coast Guard said, the first intrusion since Beijing declared its new air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the skies above.
Three Chinese government vessels, named Haijing, sailed in waters off Kubashima island, the most northerly of the Senkakus, according to the Japan Coast Guard.
Patrol vessels of the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, based in Naha, warned the Chinese ships to leave Japan's territorial waters. All the Haijing vessels departed from the territorial seas three hours later.
Chinese ships and aircraft have made repeated approaches to and entries into Japanese territorial waters and airspace since Japan purchased three of the uninhabited Senkakus, which China calls the Diaoyu Islands, in September 2012 from private ownership.
The incursions on Dec. 8 marked the first since China announced Nov. 23 that it included the contested islands in its new ADIZ, which overlaps Japan's ADIZ and the recently extended boundaries of South Korea's ADIZ.
